Display the following quote to the class:
The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)
Discuss with the class what this means. Is it a positive message?
Explain that they will watch some film clips on ways that trees have had a positive impact on different communities. All the suggested case studies feature stories of how trees regeneration is having a positive impact on local communities, select as appropriate.
Discuss the film(s) with the class and highlight the positive impact tree planting can have on restoring land to productivity, bringing communities together to improve things for themselves and also, in some cases, support livelihoods and food security.
Using the case studies as a stimulus, the pupils will work in groups to illustrate through an expressive medium the power of trees to regenerate, and the positive effects it can have on the local communities. Below are some suggestions of how they might do this.
Groups can present or view each groups work. They can carry out a peer feedback exercise as 'art / theatre / music critics' using the following questions:
For homework, each pupil could write a short review on any of the expressive pieces.
